In the suspense genre, I expect to be startled, shocked, thrilled…and even appalled. Profanity, sex and violence used in the context of the story isn’t a problem. My issue is with ethnic slurs. I recently read a new book littered with them and admit to being unpleasantly shocked. Nothing in the blurb prepared me. Even if they “fit” the tone or period of the novel, racial slurs are just so offensive. They exist in classic novels, like Mark Twain’s, although publisher’s are now being said to remove them, and creating a stir. What do you think? Kids read these books in class. Should they be banned? Do you believe classic novels should be altered?
