When I arrived at bookstore Bank of Books in Ventura County yesterday and was welcomed by President, Clarey Rudd, I realized it was worth the 167 mile drive through a hail storm. This is a cool place with thousands of rare and collectible books on its loaded shelves. I found books more than 100 years old. In here, you could browse all day. Much as I love eBooks, places like this remind me how important it is to support the bookstores so we don’t lose all of them to the digital world.
Before yesterday, I’ll admit I hadn’t set foot inside a brick and mortar bookstore for a while and this reminded me how nice it is to browse and buy the old fashioned way, not to mention meet other readers. I spent my 2.5 hour slot chatting with customers and catching a viewing of First Dog, directed by Bryan Michael Stoller, who was also at the store promoting his work.
Bank of Books is on E. Main Street in Ventura County, and has over 5000 square feet of space devoted to books, plus a warehouse of over 2 million more books. Want to find a rare, out-of-print, collectible? Call them. Chances are they have it, and if not, they’ll go to work to find it for you.
