Over the years, I’ve collected a list of handy hints for some of life’s pesky problems, and have listed a few here. Not sure if they all work. I’ve noted the ones I’ve tried.
While sorting through static laundry, wearing rubber gloves to separate the clothes prevents a static shock (tried this one, and it works a charm).
To remove chewing gum from clothing: brush egg white onto the gum with a toothbrush. Let it sit for 15 minutes, then launder the item as usual (not tried, I put the item in the freezer and picked the frozen gum off).
To get rust stains off cotton laundry: add 1 cup of lemon juice to the wash to remove discoloration (not tried).
Clean soiled shirt collars: brush shampoo along the collar before washing. Shampoo removes body oils (tried it, it works to an extent, depending on age of shirt and degree of dirt).
Add a few pieces of dry rice to salt and pepper shakers to prevent them from clogging up. Dry rice absorbs any moisture (not tried).
Butter or grease the rim of a pan while cooking pasta so it won’t boil over (Not tried, however a little oil in the pan prevents the pasta from clumping).
Treat foggy mirrors and glass by spraying shaving cream (not gel) onto the mirror or glass and rubbing in with a clean new cloth. This also works for car windows (not tried).
Remove stubborn bugs from the car windshield by adding full strength vinegar to a cloth and wiping off. Can also use coke (both work).
To remove a stubborn/slippery jar or bottle lid, place an elastic band around the lid for grip and open (tried, almost always works).
