With so many books on the market, how do you choose which ones to read? Most of the time, I go by word of mouth, especially when someone is raving about a book weeks after they finished it.
Dying For a Date is one of those books, the type you stay up late – way too late – to finish. I love murder mysteries and I love humor, but unless done brilliantly, I find the two don’t often go together. Cindy Sample does it brilliantly.
A recently divorced, mortgage loan underwriter tries out a dating service ; The Love Club. She has no trouble finding dates; she has trouble keeping them alive. Worse is to come when she finds herself a suspect, with the hots for the cop on the case.
The humor is clever and quick and the story touches on lots of real life issues. What happens to Laurel could happen to you. Dying For A Date made me laugh out loud numerous times, and kept me trying to figure it out. I thought I had, only to find out I hadn’t.
I loved Dying For A Date, but you don’t have to take my word for it. Click on the link and check out the fantastic reviews for yourself.
If you like a great mystery and plenty of laughs, try it. I doubt you’ll be sorry.
Disclaimer: I am NOT paid to do book reviews. I can only wish.
Contrary to the age old saying, I do sometimes judge a book by its cover. Its may not be the best way to choose, but I have been lucky. Choosing which books to read can sometimes take more time than actually reading. I have my favorite, Tremain, Triggianni, and McCall Smith but I also rely on the opinions of others. If I like what other authors are saying about a book, I’ll take a chance and read it. Which brings me to my next thought: thanks for recommending Dying for a Date. I plan to read it next weekend.
Take care, Shereese Maynard

Jen, thank you for the wonderful review. I still can’t believe you stayed up until after one AM to finish DYING FOR A DATE. I’m glad I was able to keep you laughing. Life is just too short not to enjoy a giggle or two.
I loved this book too! I was sitting in the Round Table Pizza waiting on my order only to have the fellow call out my name 4 times, which is when he came over to see if I was OK. I was that involved in the story that I did not even hear him! I loved the humor, and the twists, and even reading about some of the local spots where I live! I cannot wait until she gets the next one out!
I’ve read this book and I still remember really enjoying reading it long after the fact, so I guess I’m one of “those” fans. Good to know there are others like me. Maybe we’ll start a club. Maybe the author will send us some of those cookies on the bookcover.
I’m looking forward to her next book. Once I find an author I like, I like to read all her/his books. I use friend recommendations for books a lot, too.
Cindy; I wasn’t kidding about that. I really did stay up until 1am to finish it. Would love to know the inspiration behind Laurel’s mother – I loved her!
Liz; I also use recommendations for most of my purchases. Best way to get the goods on a great book.
Reese; I agree, and the cover often grabs me, too. All about those first impressions. Something’s gotta make you want to pick it up. I’m sure you’ll enjoy Dying For A Date. I thought it was fantastic.
I agree with the buzz about the cover–that grabbed my interest. When I actually laughed out loud on the first page, I was pleasantly surprised, but the real reason *Dying for a Date* is so good is that it never lets the reader down.
The humor is intelligent, and it adds to the storyline: it isn’t used to distract the reader from holes in the plot. I enjoyed the fact that the story is sophisticated without requiring note cards and a spreadsheet to figure out who done it, but I warn you: don’t get too self-assured or you’ll make a wrong guess or two!
If you haven’t already done so, go get yourself a copy of *Dying for a Date*, and pick up a copy for a friend–you’ll both be glad you did!
“Dying for a Date” lives up to all the comments. It is a good mystery filled with humor.
Reading “Dying for a “Date” is like eating gourmet chocolate…you want MORE! Cindy’s talent for mixing humor with storytelling is a real treat! Excellent when paired with your favorite wine and makes a wonderful gift!
Cindy’s protag, Laurel, is Stephanie Plum in an alternative universe, one where single moms have to squeeze in sleuthing between a 9 to 5 job, carpooling , soccer games, and searching for Mr. Right among all those Mr. Saturday nights. Her self-deprecating wit and chutzpah will make Laurel a discerning reader’s BFF. Can’t wait for the sequel!!!
I loan one copy to a friend 6 months ago and haven’t seen it since. I do hear that so-and -so has got and we’ll get it back. If it weren’t so good I would have had it back by now to join the ones to go to the 2nd used book store. Keep up the good work and am looking for the next one.
